Block printing is one of the oldest textile printing techniques in India and holds a special place in the country's heart. It is an ancient stamping technique whereby intricate designs are carved into wooden blocks by chiseling craftsmen called "chippas". The blocks are dipped in the dye, and pressed along the length of the fabric, creating a beautiful continuous design. For more intricate and multicolored patterns, the artisan uses a different block for each layer of color. It is a highly labor intensive technique that requires high hand-eye coordination, and these products are masterpieces of true craftsmanship.
